Find the right coloring page for your child
Choosing a theme they love is only half the story. How thick the lines are, how much is going on, and how big the spaces are decide whether your child colors quietly for ten minutes or gives up after two. Here's what to look for at each age.
-
Ages 2–3
Coloring is hard
One big subject, the thickest lines, big open spaces.
Toddlers start coloring from the shoulder — there's no control in the wrist or fingers yet — so don't expect them to color inside the lines. Little hands tire quickly too, so five minutes of coloring is normal. Scribbles up, down and around are the whole point, and any color on the page is success.
-
Ages 4–5
Coloring inside the lines
One subject, thick lines and a simple background.
As kids begin holding the crayon with a three-finger grip, making more controlled movements with their wrist and fingers, they'll start practicing staying inside the lines. They'll go over the lines more often than not, but every attempt is preparation for the day they write their own name.
-
Ages 6–8
Creativity and focus
Full scenes, multiple subjects, interesting details.
When kids can write the whole alphabet, coloring stops being about basic hand control — now it's about expression. They want pages with enough going on to keep them engaged and let them decide which color goes where. A page that takes three sittings isn't too hard, it's the one they'll be proudest of.
