The name Therizinosaurus comes from two Greek words, ‘therizo’ meaning ‘to reap’ and ‘sauros’ meaning ‘lizard’. Reaping means to harvest or gather grass or crops, so Therizinosaurus was a dinosaur that gathered crops.

Therizinosaurus lived in the same part of Mongolia as the deadly Velociraptor, but 5 million years later. In the Velociraptors' time the land was a desert, but when Therizinosaurus lived the  land had changed into a fertile floodplain.

Therizinosaurus was related to Tyrannosaurus but they ate very different things. T-Rex was a meat-eater, but because of its small head and the shape of its teeth scientists know Therizinosaurs ate plants, which could break-down in its big belly.

Therizinosaurus’s main predator was a relative of T-Rex called Tarbosaurus Bataar. T-Rex was king in North America and Rarbosaurus Bataar ruled in Asia. Standing tall with meter-long claws, Therizinosaurus would not have been easy prey.

By looking at the hips and wrists of plant-eating Therizinosaurus, scientists discovered it was related to meat-eating Velociraptor. As a plant-eater, Therizinosaurus had a bigger belly to break-down food and bigger legs to support their bodies rather than chasing prey.
